JALAL BINTHANEYA ARTISTIC STATEMENT

I am an accidental artist. I fell into photography out of a compulsion to capture the unseen. Oil is inescapable and so are the industrial processes and places that render it so useful. I am a Futurist from behind the lens. I am not nostalgic for the past or bent on documenting what might soon vanish. Instead, I suggest ways history might collide with a rapidly approaching future. A large part of my practice concerns doggedly requesting access—to forsaken or restricted spaces, machines, and scientific rituals—then revealing views of those cannibalized landscapes to the public. I follow a line of industrial photographers in the visual arts including Edward Burtynsky, Margaret Bourke-White, and the f/64 Group.
